Why Progressives Against Obama?We are organizing Progressives Against Obama because in voting for the FISA Amendments Act, Barack Obama has finally gone too far. For years, Democratic politicians have treated the progressive base of the Democratic Party as a toy to play with as a possession, making pretty speeches to us about how bad the Republicans are, and then voting for Republican policies when they think we aren't looking. Barack Obama's turn to the right is the climax of this abuse. It is time for progressives to get the respect they have earned. We're not going to get that respect by allowing the Democratic Party to make yet another promise that this time, after they get elected, they'll finally do the right thing. We're going to get that respect by showing the Democrats what a backbone looks like. You may think that the Democratic Party owns progressive voters. We say that after years of failure to stand up against George W. Bush, the Democratic Party has finally lost us. If the Democrats want our votes, they need to earn them. You may think that progressives can't oppose Barack Obama in 2008. We say yes we can. |
